Quality of Life and Health Economic Impacts

This prospective study will examine QoL and health economic outcomes in patients with encephalitis recruited during the 3 years of the prospective study.

The self completion quality of life questionnaire will be completed at discharged from the acute setting to home and then again at years 1 and 2.

The aim of collecting quality of life questionnaire information is to:

  • assess QoL in a prospective cohort of patients admitted to hospital with suspected Encephalitis
  • document changes in QoL at specified time-points across a 2-year period.
  • investigate the role of clinical, neuropsychological, psychological and socio-demographic factors.

In this costing analysis section of the study, resource utilisation data will be collected over this period in parallel with the clinical data collection.

The aim of collecting the information is to:
  1. To estimate the total costs incurred by the NHS, the patient and the carer with respect to hospitalisations, rehabilitation, loss of income, and other costs.
  2. To extrapolate costs in order to estimate future and long-term health care resources needed and consumed by patients.
